Business Source Premier - Searchable database of articles from scholarly business journals and other sources. Subjects include management, economics, finance, accounting, and international business. Covers: 1965 - current, though a few select journals are available from the 1940's and 1950's.  

Expanded Academic ASAP - full-text articles and citations to popular and scholarly sources in many subject areas. 

Lexis-Nexis Academic - Full-text business news, company and industry reports, accounting; coverage varies by source.

STAT-USA - Business, trade, and economic statistics from the US Department of Commerce.

Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Profiles and Reports - searchable database of profiles and reports in HTML and PDF formats. Provides analysis and forecasts of the political, economic, social, and business environment for more than 180 countries. Country profiles are typically around 70 pages of textual analysis and data on a specific country, while the updating reports areabout 30 pages in length. Covers: 1996 - present.

International Encyclopedia of Business & Management (2d ed.) - Ref HF1001 .I53 2002 (8 vols.)

Indexes & Abstracts

EconLit - database of citations with selected abstracts of the world's economic literature; includes coverage of over 400 major journals as well as articles in collective volumes (essays, proceedings, etc.), books, book reviews, dissertations, and working papers.

Catalog of U.S. Government Publications - bibliographic records of U.S. Government information products, with links to Federal agency online resources; coverage begins with January 1994,  new records are added daily. 

PAIS - citations and short abstracts for journal articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, and statistical directories. Subjects include government, international relations, legislation, political science, statistics, and related areas. Covers: 1972 - present, abstracts start at 1985. PAIS Archive Provides historical perspective on many public policy, political, economic, and social issues worldwide. Covers: 1937-1976

Sociological Abstracts- citations for articles from journals, books, conference papers, and dissertations in sociology and other social and behavioral sciences; citations after 1974 contain abstracts; covers: 1963 - present.

MSN MoneyCentral: Find Ticker Symbol

Thomas Global Register - 700,000 manufacturers and distributors from 28 countries, classified by 11,000 products and services categories.  Free, but registration required.

System for Electronic Document Analysis and Retrieval (SEDAR) - the EDGAR of Canada; public company filings, annual reports, press releases, mutual fund filings.

Wright Research Center, aka Corporateinformation.com - Company Profiles - now requires registration, but it's free. Detailed analysis of over 20,000 companies.  Registration now required, but it's free.  See "Research Reports" to match a company with its competitors. 

Standard & Poor's Register of Corporations, Directors and Executives - Ref  Desk HG4057.A43; annual directory of 75,000 companies, including 10,000 foreign companies, and 437,500 executives. Sales, number of employees, and SIC codes are provided. Biographical sketches are included for 72,000 executives.

Principal International Businesses (D & B) - Ref  HF54.U5P74; world marketing directory listing approximately 50,000 leading enterprises in 140 countries that are the largest employers worldwide. It includes mining, manufacturing, agriculture, forestry, fishing, power generation and distribution, construction, communications, transportation, financial institutions, insurance, real estate, films and other service businesses, and autonomous government entities. This publication is divided into three sections listing businesses by geographic location, by product class, and alphabetically.

Directory of Foreign Firms Operating in the U.S. - Ref HG4057.D155 2002 
Lists 2,400 foreign firms and 5,700 businesses in the U.S. owned by foreign firms. The Directory is organized by country, but also provides two alphabetical listings.

Directory of American Firms Operating in Foreign Countries - Ref HG4538.A1D5     
A three-volume directory of American companies with subsidiaries or affiliates outside the U.S. A total of 2,450 companies and 30,000 branches, subsidiaries, and affiliates are covered. Volume 1, part 1 lists U.S. companies with operations abroad in alphabetical order. Volume 1, part 2 and Volumes 2 and 3 lists the companies by country.

Dun's Regional Business Directory -San Francisco - Ref HG4058.S4D86; public and private companies included; ranked by sales, number of employees; includes company record info; listed by SIC number and geographically.

Value Line Investment Survey - Ref HG4501.V26 (Current edition of parts 1 and 3 at Reference Desk, current year of part 2 in Reference Stacks.) Company and industry profiles for the investor. Also available online (check with McHenry Reference Desk; select "log in," then select "Print Subscriber Services" at left side, then enter username/password, then select the first choice, "Value Line Investment Survey®Online."). 

Million Dollar Directory (D & B) - Ref HF5035.D82; directory of America's leading corporations, public and private; provides the ame, address and phone number for headquarters and single locations; public/private ownership designations; D-U-N-S number; SIC Codes; founding/ownership dates; and, where available, information on annual sales volume, total number of employees; names, titles and functions of officers; names of directors; import/export designations; principal banking and accounting relationships; sticker symbol and stock exchange; state of incorporation; and parent company.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe - Select "Business" from the list of search options, select "SEC Filings and Reports" from the next set of search options, finally, change "Source" to "SEC Annual Report to Shareholders." Reports are in ASCII format, no graphics.

The Manuals contain basic information on a company's history, products, property, divisions, subsidiaries, address, directors and officers, financial position, corporate debt, and stock price range. The material presented is factual rather than advisory. It is possible to get historical information on companies by searching older versions in Stacks, or see Mergent Company Data (McH Ref CD-ROM  Disk 2205) or  International Company Data  (Ref CD-ROM  Disk 2170). 

International Directory of Company Histories - Ref HD2721.I63  (5 vols.; our set is incomplete.  Approx. 40 vols. have been issued; check other area libraries.)  Profiles of the historical development of the world’s leading companies.

Directory of parent, associate and subsidiary companies.  For North and South America: v.1 corporate family trees (ultimate parent and all subsidiaries); v. 2 index to all companies in North and South America showing subsidiary-ultimate parent relationships.

America's Corporate Families and International Affiliates -Ref HG338.74 A512 (3 vols.) 
Provides the corporate structure and basic company information for 12,700 parent companies in the United States.  Subsidiary companies are listed alphabetically with a note identifying the corporate ownership. There are indexes by company name, geography (state and city), and SIC code. Volume 3 covers U.S. family members of foreign ultimate parent companies as well as foreign subsidiaries of U.S. parents. 

Directory of Corporate Affiliations - Ref Desk HG4057.A22
Provides the corporate structure and basic company information for 15,513 U.S. and non-U.S. parent companies. Volumes 1 and 2 include the master indexes. Volume 3 lists U.S. public companies, while volume 4 lists U.S. private companies. Volume 5 lists international public and private companies. Subsidiary companies follow the parent company in order of reporting hierarchy. For help using this directory, use the help guide at the front of each volume.

Standard Industrial Classification Search (SIC) - many company directories use SIC codes to classify types of industry; search the 1987 version SIC manual by keyword to access descriptive information for 4-digit SIC codes.  In print: see SIC Manual - Ref HF1042 .A55.

North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) and SIC Compared - the new version of the SIC, but many sources continue to use SIC codes instead.  Search for the 1997 NAICS code for an industry, or use the site's correspondence tables to find an SIC code's equivalent in NAICS.  Print version: NAICS - Ref HF1042 .N6.
