Entries have been made for all of the 449 books, plays, pamplets, short stories, and novellas listed in the Eads bibliography, as well as for many of the miscellaneous non-fiction writings. Entries remain to be completed for some 150 miscellaneous pieces as well as for topical themes in the Companion.

The H.E. Bates Companion will, upon completion, contain entries for every known writing by Bates as well as for significant topics, persons, and places in Bates's life as they relate to his works. Indexes will provide access by date, title, genre, and other aspects as deemed helpful to present and future research.
The Companion is a work-in-progress. Entries have been created for most of the books, stories, and essays listed in the Eads bibliography. Entries have also been created for some topics, people, and places in Bates's life, although for the most part this aspect of the Companion will be accomplished after the entries for his writings have been completed. Some entries are surrounded by brackets, indicating a very unfinished state, but even the other, more polished entries, continue to be revised as the project progresses.
The various indexes to the Companion will be produced at the end of the project. At present they contain sample entries to give an idea of the eventual means of access to the Companion.
However, currently the only way to examine the entire Companion is by clicking "Browse the Companion."
