Reference Books & Bibliographies

Encyclopedias, handbooks, bibliographies and area study guides are a good place to start when you know little about a topic, when you need an overview of a subject, or when you want a quick summary of basic ideas.

Subjects

Most library catalogs and many indexing databases use Library of Congress Subject Headings to describe the content of books, documents, etc.  Consult the LCSH [4 volumes, large red books at Z695 .U4747] for appropriate headings or ask for help at the Reference Desk.  Use keyword or title word searches to identify some relevant titles then display the long record to identify and reuse appropriate LCSH.  Sample subject headings and CRUZCAT searches:
People and places Subdivisions Cruzcat keyword search
 Indians of North America  Headings can be combined with other subject terms such as:  Agriculture  su:indians of north american and su:agriculture
  Southwest, New    Antiquities su: southwest and antiquities
  Hohokam culture    Agriculture hohokam and su:agriculture
  Mogollon    Excavations su: mesa verde and su:excavations
  Pueblo Indians    Pottery su: mogollon and pottery
Topical headings Topical headings can be combined with geographic terms su: paleoecology arizona
  Cliff-dwellings   su: cliff-dwellings pueblo
  Ethnoarchaeology   or cultural terms  ethnoarchaeology and su:north america
  Kivas kw: anasazi or su:kivas
  Petroglyphs   Also try general keywords to collect LCSH terms petroglyphs and new mexico
